MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORDear Friends of the American Indian Studies Center, We are truly fortunate at UCLA to have some of the most influential scholars in American Indian Studies affiliated with this Center. Along this line, we are delighted to share the news that, just a few weeks ago, Professor Carole Goldberg was appointed by President Barack Obama to the new Indian Law and Order Commission, which was established by the Tribal Law and Order Act. Professor Goldberg is a longtime member of the UCLA School of Law faculty and founder of the M.A./J.D. Joint Degree Program in Law and American Indian Studies. We congratulate Carole, UCLA, and the Commission on this fantastic news. You can read the entire press release below. The quarter is in full-swing, and we are pleased to be sponsoring several exciting events this spring, including the March 7th, 2011 reading by Professor Duane Champagne from his latest book, "Notes From the Center of Turtle Island". And, of course, we are devoting significant time to preparing for our spring symposium, "Race and Sovereignty" to be held in conjunction with the Critical Race Studies program at the School of Law. We hope you will save the date for what is shaping up to be a phenomenal event. As photos pour in showing a snow-covered country, from Oklahoma to New York, I hope you are enjoying the sunny, if crisp, days of winter here in beautiful Southern California. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events. Megwetch (Thank you), |

5TH ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM: RACE
& SOVEREIGNTY — MARCH 31 – APRIL 2, 2011
The 5th Annual CRS
Symposium will explore the relationship between race and sovereignty.
Sovereignty, like race, has been invoked, understood, and deployed in
contradictory ways. Historically, sovereignty has been an important vehicle
through which hegemonic power has been enforced, for example, by articulating
citizenship as a racial project rooted in the power to exclude.
