MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORDear Friends of the American Indian Studies Center, November is National Native American Heritage Month, and things are abuzz at the AISC. (Click here to read President Obama's Proclamation.) Accordingly, there are many exciting events planned -- on and off campus -- to recognize the continent's original inhabitants. From celebrations with the Mayor at City Hall to Bird Singers performing at the UCLA campus to the Indian Arts Marketplace at the Autry, November is filled with opportunities to engage with the Native American community in the Los Angeles area. There are also many exciting events coming up in 2011, so please mark your calendars. For the most up-to-date information, please check the 'Events' section of our website, which is updated daily. Don't miss this opportunity to shop for original jewelry, artwork, basketry, sculpture, pottery, textiles, and more! This fun and entertaining weekend includes performances by local American Indian musicians, storytellers, dancers, and actors as well as opportunities to sample a variety of American Indian foods; participate in hands-on craft activities; and experience live artists' demonstrations.
