Film Screening: TUSHKA
Free Film Screening The first feature created by an all-Native cast and crew, Ian Skorodin's (Choctaw) Tushka leaves an indelible mark on all who see it. Based on a true story and set in 1972, Tushka tells the story of a Native American activist, involved in the American Indian Movement, who led a rally to FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. Two days later his house was firebombed, killing his parents, his wife, their girls and an infant. Skorodin re-creates the civil unrest of the era and the brutal treatment of indigenous people by American authorities. Six years in the making, the Wiki for Indigenous Languages makes its appearance on the Internet this year. Collaborating with Yoeme Indian community members, programmers, game theorists, digital education specialists, and linguists, Professor Shorter’s project evidences the difficulties and ideals of working on digital projects with such varied stakeholders. In this first public presentation of the project, David will cover the history of the project, some of its particularly educational tribulations, and its exciting trajectory.
