Message from the Director
Dear Friends of the UCLA American Indian Studies Center,
June has opened with tragic events on the UCLA campus, and we are all saddened by the untimely passing of our colleague Professor William Klug. I was grateful that our AISC staff and students acted quickly, safely and responsibly during the campus lockdown.
May was a busy month for the AISC, and some of our activities are discussed below. We are now looking forward to commencement events. Congratulations graduates!! Also, please join us for the 5th Annual American Indian Research Symposium and learn more about our IDP students’ research and internships (details below). Hope to see you there!

United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) Report
From May 9 to May 16, 2016 UCLA students engaged in American Indian Studies participated in the working of the fifteenth session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) in New York. Permanent Forum is an advisory body to UN Economic and Social Council and a focal UN point for coordination of activities in the area of indigenous issues. The Forum is also a unique space for political dialogue between indigenous politicians, representatives of member states and international community.
The trip was possible due to support by UCLA American Indian Studies Center. It was led by the Center Visiting Scholar Ulia Gosart (Popova) who also organized a seminar “Resolving Conflict and Loss - an Indigenous Path” which featured as a side event of the Forum’s session. The seminar occurred on May 12 and featured case studies of structural violence against indigenous peoples from New Zealand, Samoa and annexed Crimea. It offered a critique of violence against indigenous people and a path toward healing to contribute to this year Forum’s theme “Indigenous peoples: conflict, peace and resolution.” Click here to read the full report.
The Native American and Indigenous Association Conference
This year, the UCLA American Indian Studies Center supported 11 AIS students in attending the Native American and Indigenous Association 2016 Annual Meeting, held in the University of HawaiÊ»i at MÄnoa from May 18 to May 21.
Several students also presented their papers at the conference:

- Christine Vega: “Xicana-IndÃgena Ph.D. Mamis, Creating Space of Visibility and Belonging in Higher Education”
- Megan Baker: “Forward: Moving Native Youth from Reconciliation at Obama’s Tribal Youth Gathering for a Sovereign Future”
