Cindi Alvitre (Tongva)
Mario Borja (Chamorro)
Kehaulani Vaughn (Kanaka ‘ÅŒiwi)
In this symposium, we seek to explore the indigenous crosscurrents and connections between indigenous communities in Southern California. We invite you to a discussion of the following questions: What initially inspired you to turn to Indigenous navigation in your life’s work? What is it about encountering other Indigenous peoples, whether it is in the aesthetics or politics of Indigenous knowledge or in terms of Indigenous protocols, that you find important in your relationship with navigation communities? And how does an understanding of canoe cultures enable you to engage the indigenous geographies of California and the indigenous seascapes of greater Oceania? |
