Welcome to Fall! As you can see below, we have hit the ground running in our 50th anniversary year. I hope to see you at some of the events listed below!
I am very sorry to say that Stephen Pilcher is leaving his position as the AISC's Operations & Events Coordinator, but delighted to announce that he has accepted the position of Student Affairs Officer in the American Indian Studies Interdepartmental Program. I want to congratulate and thank Stephen for his outstanding contributions to the center, and look forward to continuing to work with him to make AIS at UCLA thrive.
We will soon be hiring a new staff member to fill this position (see job ad below).

Applications Opened for Indigenous Studies Tenure-Track Full-Time Assistant Professor at UCLA
|
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position for an Indigenous Studies scholar in sociology, geography, or related social science fields. The successful candidate will be housed in the relevant disciplinary department, with teaching and service responsibilities split between the department and American Indian Studies.

UCLA American Indian Studies Center is seeking applications for a full-time Operations & Events Coordinator. Under the general direction of the Management Services Officer (MSO), provide departmental support on all finance, personnel, and administrative matters. Responsible for all phases of Purchasing, Accounts Payable orders, travel and entertainment requests. Serve as UCPath initiator for various employee classes, including staff, academic student employees, visiting scholars, lecturers, and faculty. Manage all facilities and operational requests. Act as the Events coordinator in arranging travel, contacting venues and caterers, and following through to completion. Must be flexible in work hours to ensure for a successful event.

A talk with Dr. Loriene Roy, (Anishinabe), Professor, School of Information, The University of Texas at Austin and Whina Te Whiu (Te Rarawa), Curator, Te Ahu Museum, and Vision Holder for Raiatea Tribal Museum and Resource Centre, Aotearoa. They will speak about some of the responsibilities, protocols, and necessary community serving roles of collecting for Native subject libraries and Native archives and museums. Also discussed will be the concept of integrating in this process a tribal worldview and cultural values first, and professional museum and library practices second, and how this might inform subject collecting and archival collecting at institutions broadly.

Join UCLA's American Indian Studies Center for an interdisciplinary public symposium on October 15th about the past, present, and future of the University of California's relationship with tribes. On the 15th, three panels will be held, discussing UCLA's centennial anniversary with respect to California Indians, the current state of relationships and projects between the UCs and tribal communities and institutions, and future innovative practices working with tribal communities. On October 16th, three workshops will be conducted whose goal is to create policy papers for developing community-engaged classrooms, creating better practices for American Indian and Indigenous retention and recruitment, and generating practices that ensure repatriation and maintenance of cultural heritage. This symposium is part of a series of 50th-anniversary events sponsored by the AISC.

Indigenous Aesthetics and The Beadworkers: Stories

In this book talk, author Beth Piatote reflects on the influence of Nez Perce/Ni:mi:pu: language, literature, and aesthetics in the creation of her new mixed-genre collection, The Beadworkers: Stories, released on October 22 by Counterpoint Press.
Beth Piatote is an associate professor of Native American Studies at UC Berkeley, where she teaches interdisciplinary Native and Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Language Revitalization. She is Nez Perce, enrolled at Colville.

News from the AISC Library

The American Indian Studies Library did some collection development this Summer in Albuquerque, New Mexico where we visited the organizers of Indigenous Comic Con’s shop Red Planet Books & Comics, a book store that specializes in collections created by Native writers, artists, scholars, poets, and others, with a substantial collection of Native graphic novels and materials with firsthand Native perspectives. Come check out some of our acquisitions this Fall as the term rolls out!

The American Indian Studies Center Library is planning to refresh its look/design and environment this year. We are looking for students, alumni, community members, faculty, staff, ethnic studies colleagues, and other stakeholders to take our survey this term, if you haven’t already, to help us “Indigenize the Library!” Please take this survey and let us know what you think! The Library is working on several important archival initiatives this year (2019/2020) including collections that pertain to Native Contemporary Art, Native Health, Native Dance and Theater, UCLA’s Native Activism and Native Activism generally with emphasis on California , as well as a special photography collection on Native Agriculture. The American Indian Studies Librarian visited the LA Skins Fest’s Native American Animation Panel at Netflix and the 2019 LA Zinefest to explore storytelling resources and potential vehicles for Native voices and student interests in L.A.
We want to invite students and our alumni and community friends to come by the library to come check out all the cool zines we acquired there and remind yourself what “reading for pleasure” means.
